What's in a Name?

Lab quality coaching is more than a service—it’s a mindset. When I first registered LabHandler.com, I didn’t have a business plan. I just had a name that felt right. The term LabHandler captured something essential about the role of a quality professional in a laboratory: someone who works behind the scenes, guiding teams, refining systems, and preparing for success

At the time, I didn’t know what the site would become. But I knew my approach to laboratory quality was different. I believed in coaching over compliance, strategy over shortcuts, and building cultures of quality that last.

Where the Name Came From

The idea for LabHandler clicked during a family Thanksgiving tradition: watching the National Dog Show. That year, they profiled a top contender and introduced both the owner and the handler. It was the handler—not the owner—who guided the dog in the ring, refined its strengths, and ensured it was ready for judgment.

That moment stuck with me. In the lab world, quality managers don’t own the work. But we shape how it’s presented. We coach, prepare, and troubleshoot. We build trust and readiness. Like professional handlers, we work behind the scenes to bring out the best in our teams and systems.

What LabHandler Is Not

Over the years, I’ve heard a few jokes about the name:

“So you’re saying the people working at the bench are dogs?” —Anonymous Colleague

Absolutely not.

LabHandler isn’t about training pups or sniffing out nonconformances. It’s about the collaborative relationship between a lab quality consultant and the laboratory they support. It’s about being observant, strategic, and ready for whatever comes next—especially when preparing for ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation or navigating complex audits.

Coaching in Practice

Handlers build strong bonds, understand nuances, and commit to honest assessment. Laboratory quality professionals do the same. We guide labs through audits, corrective actions, and system improvements—not just to pass, but to grow.

On audit day, our version of the Big Show, we jog alongside our labs. We highlight strengths and absorb feedback. Our role is essential to the performance. Through lab training and coaching, we help shape confidence in systems, documentation, and culture.

LabHandler Today

Today, LabHandler.com is more than a clever name. It’s a reflection of my mission: to help labs build lasting cultures of quality through coaching, training, and strategic support. I share insights, tools, and stories that make quality easier to understand and apply.
This platform is my passion project—and I’m just getting started.
